Rustlers Weekend Recap - September 29, 2025
Rustlers Athletics heads into October with a few weeks of exhibition left, but more teams getting into regular action.
Rustlers Exhibition
Women's volleyball traveled to Thunderchild First Nation to face the university of Saskatchewan Huskies in an exhibition match, where the Rustlers fell in 5 sets. Men's volleyball had the weekend off.
Women's and men's basketball held an exhibition series with the RDP Queens and King's in the Lloyd Campus Gym. The women, dealing with several injuries, fell to the Queens in both contests, while the men were able to blowout the Kings in their games.
Hockey also had three preseason games this past week, starting in Sherwood Park on Wednesday, followed by facing Prince Albert's U18 AAA squad Friday and Outlook U22 from the SJFHL on Saturday. Final scores were 4-0, 5-2, 6-0.
Rustlers Rowing
The Rustlers Rowing team was in action at the DINO Sprints, hosted by the University of Calgary. A total of 13 rowers raced in the event and Lakeland's Novice Women's 8+ won gold in a six boat final, edging a boat from U of C by 3/10 of second, easily the closest race of the day. Additionally, the women's quad also had a good race, finishing second in their final.
Rustlers Soccer
Finally, Rustlers soccer had an important matchup with Edmonton teams over the weekend, needing wins to stay in the playoff hunt. Saturday, they were at home against the Concordia Thunder, Sunday was a road tilt against the King's Eagles.
The women lost 0-3 and 0-2 this weekend, with Natalie Pelchat earning POG status on Saturday. The men were closer, but still lost 1-2 and 2-4 respectively. Josh Malin scored all three tallies for the team.
What's Coming Up
This week, men's volleyball are off to Revelstoke to play in the College of the Rockies exhibition tournament, facing the Avalanche, as well as the Camosun Chargers and Capilano Blues from the PACWest conference, along with the SAIT Trojans. Women's volleyball will play a pair of matches in Edmonton against Grant MacEwan.
The basketball teams will have another exhibition series Friday evening against the Augustnaa Vikings here at the Lloyd Campus Gym. Tip off is 6:00 pm for the women and 8:00 pm for the men. Saturday, the men then face Western Canada Prep Academy at 3:00 pm at Lakeland.
Soccer has a single road game Saturday, where they face the NAIT Ooks at Strathcona Athletic Park in Edmonton. Kick off is 12:00 pm and 2:15 pm.
And women's hockey will finally raise their championship banner as part of their home opener this Friday evening at the Cenovus Energy Hub. Puck drop is 7:00 pm.
