Rustlers Weekend Recap - January 26, 2026
A quieter weekend for Rustlers Athletics sets the stage for an incredibly busy stretch.
Rustlers Hockey
Women's hockey was the only team in action Friday and Saturday, as they faced off with the NAIT Ooks. The Rustlers were making their home debut for the second semester and it was the first game against the Ooks in months.
Lakeland got off to a slow start Friday night at the Cenovus Energy Hub, trailing by two goals after the first period. Despite more scoring chances, the ladies were unable to get on the board, while the Ooks capitalized on a turnover to go up 3-0 with minutes left in the second. In the third, the momentum was all Rustlers, eventually scoring twice to get within one, courtesy of Caludia Lammers and Keyra Buziak, who leads the league in scoring.
After several furious shifts and close calls at the Ooks goal line, NAIT was able to ice the puck into an empty net with 50 seconds left. However, the Rustlers refused to quit, as Asha Petire scored with 15 seconds left and had a chance to get one more shot on goal. Ultimately, they just missed their transition into the offensive zone, sealing the score 4-3 for the Ooks.
Following scoreless first period in Edmonton, Buziak notched a shorthanded goal to give the Rustlers the lead, followed by three more Rustler tallies in the third for a 4-1 victory. Schay Camphaug, starting both games for the weekend, made 28 saves in the win.
What's Coming Up
The Rustlers are now 17-2, first in the ACAC and eight points clear of RDP. Five of the remaining six regular season games are in the Border City, starting this weekend against Medicine Hat, a team coming off a big weekend sweep. Puck drop is 7:15 pm at the Hub on Friday, 2:30 on Saturday.
Basketball is also in action, facing the Augustana Vikings. Friday night they are in Camrose, while they return to the Lloyd Campus Gym Saturday for 6:00 and 8:00 pm. The men's team will have potentially clinched playoff hosting duties by the end of Saturday.
Women's and mixed curling are off to Lac La Biche, where they will compete at the ACAC Championship. The women are 8-4, with close contests against the undefeated SAIT Trojans, while the mixed team is coming off a great showing at the winter regional, going 4-1
Finally, volleyball have a big weekend, where they host two game days against the NWP Wolves. Friday night is the women's team's annual Food Bank Night, with all donations going to the Lloydminster branch of the Salvation Army. Match begins at 6:00 pm, with the men's following 30 minutes after the women's tilt concludes. Then on Saturday, it's Senior Day Celebration for the women's team, as Avery Bates Emma Jeffs and Seanna Trumier are recognized for their five years at Lakeland. First serve is just after 1:00 pm, with the ceremony starting right when the match ends and the men's match taking places roughly 30 minutes later.
