Rustlers Athletics makes history with year-end awards
Rustlers Athletics officially wrapped the 2025-2026 season last night, with significant goodbyes and major league awards helping make it even more memorable.
Lakeland College held the annual Rustlers Awards banquet on Lloydminster Campus Tuesday evening, celebrating our student athletes accomplishments on and off the court. The success of the women's hockey program resulted in additional hardware from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).
Marly Dumanski and Keyra Buziak, already given ACAC Women's Hockey Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year in early March, were named as the ACAC's Overall Female Rookie of the Year and Female Player of the Year, across all sports. Dumanski, third in the league in scoring and an active participant in community for women's hockey, made an instant impact on the team in her debut season. Buziak, following a record setting season of 28 goals and 43 points, led the playoffs in scoring to earn Finals MVP.
This is the first time an ACAC institution has won both the Female Overall Rookie and Female Overall Player awards in the same season, as well as having two members from the same team. It's also the fourth time a Lakeland athlete was won Female Overall Rookie and third time for Female Overall Player.
Buziak & Malin named Rustlers of the Year
The women's hockey standout was the Female Athlete of the Year for Rustlers Athletics, while Soccer & Futsal striker Josh Malin was Male Athlete of the Year. The fourth year from Saskatoon was an All-Conference Selection in both sports and a tournament All-Star at the ACAC Futsal Championship, playing a major role in helping his squad to their bronze medal finish.
Lakeland acknowledged numerous league awards previously announced, including 14 All-Conference selections, three championship MVP's, six tournament all-stars and more. There were also three student athletes who received a CCAA Academic All-Canadian Award (for achieving a 3.5 GPA while receiving an All-Conference or All-Star award) and each of the highest scholastic achievers per team were recognized (combining for a collective GPA of 3.8).
Significant Goodbyes
Libero Seanna Trumier of women's volleyball gave the senior athlete speech to end the evening. She and her teammates Emma Jeffs and Avery Bates, as well as men's basketball players Baha Salma, David Dimaano and Roy Anku, were the Rustlers fifth year athletes this season. There were additional graduates who competed for three or four seasons for teams as well.
Finally, Rustlers Athletics saluted long time Athletic Director Al Rogan, who retires at the end of the school year. A Lakeland Employee since the mid-1980's, Rogan has left a significant legacy with the Athletics program, including more than a decade coaching volleyball and nearly 20 years as AD. During the latter period, Lakeland saw incredible growth on and off the court, including a significant jump in academic excellence, more than 10 ACAC Championships and six CCAA Championships.
